Duchess

My arms were dusted white with flour when Honor surprised me in the kitchen. I was mixing up a storm. I smiled at her and said, “I’m making you some more of my mama’s homemade buttermilk biscuits. Can’t you just taste ’em? Goodness, we had ’em every Sunday for supper. I’d always split mine down the middle and smother it in fresh cream butter and this wonderful honey Mr. Hatchell used to bring us from his beehives. Oh, Mama,Mama,Mama.”

My hand sank through the dough when my mind wandered off to yesteryear. Honor cleared her throat to reel me back in.

“Goodness, I do miss her. I sure would love for her to be here,” I said finally, wadding my dough up again with more flour. “Oh, and she’d love you, Honor. You feelin’ any better? You got more color to you, that’s for sure.”

“Much better,” she said. “And hungry now. What can I do to help?”

“Not a thing.”

“I have to do something!” She picked up a carton of eggs and looked around for a bowl to crack them in.

“Not in my kitchen you don’t! Not today. You’re my guest this mornin’. Just sit your skinny self down, dear, and let Saint Anne put some meat on you. Just look at me,” I said, wiggling my skirt-covered hips, “I know what I’m doin’.”

Honor put the eggs down and I grabbed them. “I must say, I got my work cut out for me. Why, the looks of you, you’re skinnier than a chicken in wintertime!”

“You think I’m skinny?” she asked. “Really?”

“Well, just look at you! I could pick my teeth with you after breakfast!”

A little smile spread across her lips. “How about that. You know, I’ve tried all my life to lose weight. Not that I was ever really that big—but my rear-end, you know.”

“Oh, child, you don’t know the meaning of ‘rear-end.’ Turn around. Show me. Where is it? Who took it?”

“Hmm. It used to be here, I promise,” she said. “Strange. Must be stress, I suppose.”

Honor walked to the window and stared out over the ocean. Her eyes fell to the mound of shells where I keep my painful memories. I keep them close to me, see, at all times. But there I was, cooking a feast for her and loving every second of it. Not a care in the world, past, present, or future, when my hands are full.

I wrapped an apron around my waist. I was wearing clothes, a peasant skirt and a way-too-tight tank top that showed my long, sagging cleavage. It used to fit me just fine, and I couldn’t understand what had happened.

“You look very nice today,” Honor teased me. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for going clothed for breakfast. ”

“Well now, I take offense to that, young lady! Why in the world would you prefer these rags over my naturally svelte and beautiful body? Aren’t you used to me by now?”

Honor laughed and said, “Well, I don’t know. I could probably be here for twenty years and never get used to you being naked.
